New Delhi: As a part of Digital India initiatives, Indian Railways is all set to fit Global Positioning System (GPS) in 6,000 locomotives by December 2021, aiming to improve efficiency and ensure safety in both passenger and freight operations.
While addressing a press conference on Thursday, Railway Board Chairman, Vinod Kumar Yadav informed that Railways has already installed GPS system in 2,700 electric locomotives and 3,800 diesel locomotives as of now.
"All the key processes of railways have been fully digitalised including the satellite tracking of trains. By December 2021, entire 6,000 locomotives will be fitted with GPS," he said.
Yadav also stated that Indian Railways has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). He said 600 locomotives will be fitted with GPS by the end of this year.
"This move will improve the operation of trains. It will improve the efficiency of trains and their safety as well. The data will be recorded by GPS will be used for control office operations," said the Railway official.
This GPS system installed in trains captures the real-time data relating to the speed and location of the trains. It also helps for real-time communication to passengers about the train arrival and departures.
