Railways inks pact with Odisha govt to redevelop Bhubaneswar station

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the redevelopment of Bhubaneswar Railway Station was signed on Thursday between Indian Railways and the Government of Odisha. The tendering process for the project is expected to begin in March next year and the actual work is slated to start on August 2020.

New Delhi: Indian Railways on Thursday inked a pact with Odisha government for redevelopment of Bhubaneswar railway station.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two parties was inked here in presence of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who joined in through a video conference from Bhubaneswar.

Railways Minister Piyush Goyal also joined via video conference.

As part of the project, area adjoining Bhubaneswar Railway station will be developed as a railway station multi-modal hub (RSMH) under the Centre's smart city mission.

The hub, which would entail an investment of over Rs 800 crore, will have a new terminal building for the railway station, city bus terminal, car parking and other allied public utilities.

The tendering process for the project is expected to begin in March next year and the actual work is slated to start on August 2020.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Tuhin Kant Pandey, Chief Resident Commissioner of Odisha, said, "This project will be completed within 30 months from the date of the contract and the total spending over this project will be more than Rs 800 crores."

Both the parties expect the public infrastructure component of the project to be completed in 30 months, while the mixed-use real estate component is expected to take 48 months to complete.

The public infrastructure facilities like new terminal building and city bus terminal will be developed under the EPC/PPP model entailing an investment of around Rs 300 crore. On the other hand, the mixed-use retail part would come under the PPP model and entail an investment of around Rs 540 crore.

Intro:New Delhi: Indian Railways signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Odisha government for the redevelopment of Bhubaneswar station as a multi-model transport hub.


Body:Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal took part in the MoU signing ceremony through video conferencing, while Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was present in the event. While addressing the media, Pradhan said that this project would be very much beneficial for the citizens of Bhabaneswar and it could become a hub for tourism in the area.

Odisha CM complimented Indian Railways for coming forward to the develop the project. He also said that it will be a world-class multi-modal transport hub and gold be a first-of-its-kind in the country.

Area adjoining Bhubaneswar Railway station is proposed for development as Railway Station Multimodal Hub (RSMH) project under Smart City mission of Government of India. This project is being taken up by the government of Odisha through the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA). It will consist of a new terminal building for railway station, city bus terminal, public car parking and other allied public utilities. The area earmarked to Railways for redevelopment is 1.74 lakh square feet.


Conclusion:While speaking to ETV Bharat, Tuhin Kant Pandey, Chief Resident Commissioner of Odisha, said, "This project will be completed within 30 months from the date of contract which is expected to be around June 2020. Project reports will be ready by February 2020." He also informed that the total spending over this project will be more than Rs 840 crores, in which Railways will share the cost of Rs 70 crores.
