Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab): A group of migrant workers, accompanied by women and children, reached Punjab's Fatehgarh Sahib from Ludhiana after travelling on foot for three days on Saturday. The group of 50 included children and pregnant women.
According to sources, the people who were employed in the factories in Punjab's Ludhiana were asked by their employers to quit the job saying there was no hope of resumption of works in the near future due to corona fear. They were also told to leave the factory campus.
"We had been pushed to the brink of starvation after all factories were shut and we had no money to buy food. Eventually, we decided to reach home on foot," said a migrant worker.
"I am an illiterate person. I could not register myself in the migrant people's portal as per government instructions. I do not have the money to fill the online form. I am appealing to the state government to help us," the worker added.
Reportedly, several migrant workers are pouring in every day without waiting for the government’s trains to reach them. Most of them are so desperate to meet their families that they don’t want to waste their time waiting for government relief anymore.
However, with the battle of survival getting tough with each passing day the hapless migrant workers continue reaching homes on foot, sources said.
