Jalandhar: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police and his associate were arrested after international kabaddi player, Arvinderjit Singh was shot dead in Kapurthala city of Punjab on Thursday.
The ASI, Paramjeet Singh, 45, of Bhamuwal village, was posted at the Dhilwan police station. He had gone to Lakhan Ke Padde village to drop a friend. Both the ASI and his friend, Mangu, 28, were arrested on Friday.
"Arvindjit Singh and four of us were returning from the kabaddi ground around 10:30 pm when we spotted a suspicious car parked along the roadside. As soon as Arvinderjit asked those seated within to come out, bullets were fired at him and unfortunately he succumbed to the injury. I too got wounded while my friends had to hide themselves behind the car so as to save their lives," Pardeep Singh, Arvinderjit's friend added.

According to the reports, the ASI had an altercation with six young men in a car at the Lakhan Ke Padde village at 10 pm on Thursday. Following this, the ASI fired at Arvinderjit Singh from his licensed gun. Further, Singh received a bullet injury and died on the spot. However, the deceased's associate, Pardeep, was injured in the incident.
"The two groups apparently had a heated argument after which the ASI fired and killed the kabbadi player. The weapon and the vehicle have been recovered by the police and further investigation is on," SHO Jaspal Singh of Subhanpur, added.
A case has been registered against Paramjeet and Mangu under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and sections of the Arms Act, at the Subhanpur police station. Further the postmortem result of the deceased is awaited.
