West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar said on Sunday that any initiative to empower women will result in the welfare of humanity.

Extending greetings on the occasion of International Women's Day, Dhankhar said "let's reaffirm the pledge to ensure safety and respect for women".

"Any investment for empowerment of women is investment for welfare of humanity and would enhance societal values," the governor said.

Rahul Gandhi greets women on International Women's Day

"May you grow from strength to strength," was Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's message to Indian women on the occasion of Women's Day on Sunday.

He also posted Mahatma Gandhi's quote on Twitter, "If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immeasurably man's superior."

"Happy Women's Day to all the women of India. May you grow from strength to strength," the former Congress chief said.

He also posted a collage of Indian women achievers from diverse fields -- from former prime minister Indira Gandhi to cricketer Mithali Raj.

Goa CM lauds achievements, efforts of women

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant greeted women on the occasion of the International Women's Day on Sunday and appreciated their accomplishments and efforts made for the betterment of society.

In a tweet, he said women should be motivated to make greater achievements in future.

"#WomensDay is the celebration of respect, appreciation, love and care towards women in our lives and in the society. On this International Womens Day, lets appreciate the accomplishments and efforts of women in our society, and motivate them for greater future achievements."

Goa BJP chief Sadanand Tanavade also greeted women and said gender equality is essential for the growth of economies and communities.

"This day is a reminder for every human being that gender equality is essential for economies and communities to thrive. Greetings on #InternationalWomenDay," he tweeted.

State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane in his message said everyone should strive to make this a gender-equal world.

"This Women's Day is all about celebrating and spreading Equality. Let us all pledge to make this world a gender-equal world," he said on Twitter.

State Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo urged all men to show respect to women.

"We owe our existence to women who bear great pains to bring us into this world. They stand behind us like a rock when all seems lost. They are the reason why we are successful. I urge all men to show love and respect for all women. I wish all women a very #HappyWomensDay."

Why women's reservation bill not tabled in last 6 years? asks Yechury

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury hit out at the Centre for "tokenism and gimmickry" on Women's Day on Sunday, and sought to know why the women's reservation bill was not tabled in Parliament yet.

The comments come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to hand over all his social media accounts to women as part of International Women's Day.

"Women's Day is not just about one day. Its revolutionary origins for equal wages and rights are a powerful and important reinforcer of those who hold up half the sky," Yechury tweeted. "We must struggle every day to make that promise of equality come true."

"For the past one decade, the women's reservation bill is sitting in the Lok Sabha speaker's room. Instead of gimmickry and tokenism, why has Modi not got it tabled and got it passed in the last 6 years?" the CPI(M) leader asked.

Women are pillars of society: Mamata

Asserting that her government is committed to the welfare and empowerment of women, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday that they are the pillars of the society.

Recalling the state's welfare schemes such as 'Kanyashree' and 'Rupashree', Banerjee greeted women across the globe on the occasion of the International Women's Day.

"Women are the pillars of our society. They are our pride. On #IWD2020 let me congratulate all my mothers and sisters around the world," she tweeted.

"From Kanyashree to Rupashree, our Govt in #Bangla is committed to the welfare and empowerment of women. Our Govt in #Bangla is financially empowering rural women through self- help groups," Banerjee added.

She said the Swasthya Sathi health insurance cards are also issued in the name of women, recognising them as the head of the family.

Woman play key role in development of any state, country: Nitish Kumar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday conveyed his good wishes to women on the International Women's Day and acknowledged their contribution in the development of any state or country. 

Conveying his gratitude towards women, the Bihar Chief Minister said: "Women are an integral part of society and they are creating their identity on the basis of their potential. They play an important role in the development of any state or country."

"We can define development in true sense when women will be given a safe and better environment along with social and economic development," he added.

New Delhi: On the occasion of women's day President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and several leaders extended their greetings on Sunday.

Taking to his Twitter handle, President Ram Nath Kovind said: "

"We organised various activities in the last one week in view of empowering women. We facilitated women doing well in various areas be it sports, music or studies. I feel glad that girls are doing extremely well as compared to boys in various educational institutions," he said.
