Raksha Bandhan celebrated on subdued note amid COVID-19

Raksha Bandhan, a festival that reaffirms love and affection between brothers and sisters, was celebrated with traditional fervour in Telangana on Monday, albeit on a subdued note due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sisters tied 'rakhis' (bands) around the wrists of their brothers while some of them conveyed their wishes over the phone in view of the virus spread.

Stalls selling rakhis have been set up here during the last few days though footfalls have been less compared to normal times.

On the other hand, the medical staff of a COVID-19 hospital in Jharkhand's Jamtara also tied Rakhis to patients so that they do not miss their family members and loved one amid the coronavirus crisis. The occasion left patients and hospital staff in tears of joy.

Minister Mamta Bhupesh and legislators Shakuntala Rawat, Ganga Devi and others tied Rakhi on the wrist of the chief minister and offered him, sweets. The women MLAs also tied Rakhi on the wrists of other legislators including Sanyam Lodha. The festival was celebrated in Hotel Suryagarh in Jaisalmer where the MLAs have been made to stay to save them from the alleged bids to make them ditch the Gehlot government. They are expected to stay here till the assembly session begins on August 14.

President Kovind describes nurses as saviours

President Ram Nath Kovind celebrated Raksha Bandhan with members of the nursing community at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday and described them as saviours who are risking their own lives in the line of duty to save others.

The nurses offered rakhis to the president and narrated their experience in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a statement.

The president felicitated the nurses, saying they have been performing the role of front-line COVID warriors and their commitment to duty earns respect.

Traditionally, on Raksha Bandhan, sisters seek their brothers' protection, but in case of nurses it is they who through their dedication and commitment extend a helping hand to their brothers and ensure protection for all people, the president said.

Referring to two members of the Military Nursing Service, who tested COVID-19 positive while dealing with patients but recovered soon and resumed duty with renewed vigour, he thanked the nursing fraternity for their dedication during the pandemic.

Sharing their experience of helping COVID-19 patients, each nurse offered her own narrative but all of them seemed unanimous in their opinion that the patients suffer severe mental stress due to wrong impressions about the disease and this needs to be addressed medically and through counselling.

The president heard them and complimented them for their exemplary services. He also conveyed best wishes to the entire nursing community on Raksha Bandhan.

Those who met and conveyed greetings to the president included representatives of the Trained Nurses' Association of India, the Military Nursing Service and the President's Estate Clinic, the Rashtrapati Bhavan statement said.

Students tie rakhis on trees with 'Save Environment' messages in Moradabad

Students in Moradabad celebrated Raksha Bandhan in a unique way by tying rakhis on trees with messages like 'Save Environment' and 'Save Trees, Save Life'.

This was done by the students in an attempt to raise awareness about the environment.

Shilpi Saini, a student said, "Taking this opportunity to spread awareness about the environment, we are tying rakhi on the trees. With the messages 'Save Environment' and 'Save Trees, Save Life,' we want to tell everyone how beneficial are the trees."

"With the rise in population, the trees are being chopped down. It is our responsibility to protect these trees and it helps our environment," said another student, Pushpanjali Singh.

Singh added, "Rakshabandhan is known as a sign of protection. Likewise, we want to protect the trees as they do the same for us."

Spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi extended greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, who thanked her for the wishes and said blessings from India's "Nari Shakti" gives him great strength.

In a video message on the micro-blogging website, Amritanandamayi wished may god bless Prime Minister Narendra Modi and give him the strength to take the right decision.

"Today, the country is facing the threat of war from neighbouring countries. Due to the pandemic, there are also several issues within the country. Lata Mangeshkar extend Raksha Bandhan greetings to PM Modi

The veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar took to Twitter today and extended greetings on Raksha Bandhan and wished that the Prime Minister is showered with the strength to protect the people of the country.

Singer Lata Mangeshkar posted a video extending wishes to the Prime Minister saying he has done so much for the country that the people will never be able to forget him.

"I could not send a Rakhi on this auspicious occasion, and the whole country knows why... Today, lakhs and crores of women in the country are holding out Rakhis for you, but it is hard for them to tie the Rakhi. Prayers offered at Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar Temple on Raksha Bandhan

On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and the last Monday of the holy 'Sawan' month, devotees and priests offered prayers at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

'Bhasma aarti' was performed early in the morning at the temple, during which a rakhi was tied on Baba Mahakal's idol and 11,000 'laddoos' were offered.

"We offered around 11,000 laddoos to Baba Mahakal. A rakhi was also tied on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan today. Usually, over 2,000 people participate in the Bhasma aarti in the Sawan month, but this year due to the pandemic, their participation has been restricted," said Bharat Sharma, a priest at the temple.

Earlier, Sharma had said, "Devotees can only do darshan from a distance between 5.30 am and 9 pm. The Mahakal Temple Committee has made arrangements for 10,000 devotees to have darshan daily."

Before the aarti, the idol was bathed and anointed with Maha Panchamrit in which milk, curd, ghee, honey, and fruits. After that, the idol was decorated with bhang and sandalwood, following which ashes were anointed. The idol was then dressed after which the aarti was performed.

"We offered prayers for the welfare of our brothers at the Mahakaleshwar Temple on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan today," said Kumari Srishti Sharma, a devotee.

Lata Mangeshkar extend Raksha Bandhan greetings to PM Modi

The veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar took to Twitter today and extended greetings on Raksha Bandhan and wished that the Prime Minister is showered with the strength to protect the people of the country.

Singer Lata Mangeshkar posted a video extending wishes to the Prime Minister saying he has done so much for the country that the people will never be able to forget him.

"I could not send a Rakhi on this auspicious occasion, and the whole country knows why... Today, lakhs and crores of women in the country are holding out Rakhis for you, but it is hard for them to tie the Rakhi. If possible, promise me on this occasion of Rakhi that you will take the country to new heights," the nightingale of India said.

Thanking her for the message, PM Modi said the country will reach new heights and attain unprecedented success with the blessings of crores of mothers and sisters.

Prayers offered at Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar Temple on Raksha Bandhan

On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan and the last Monday of the holy 'Sawan' month, devotees and priests offered prayers at the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

'Bhasma aarti' was performed early in the morning at the temple, during which a rakhi was tied on Baba Mahakal's idol and 11,000 'laddoos' were offered.

"We offered around 11,000 laddoos to Baba Mahakal. A rakhi was also tied on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan today. Usually, over 2,000 people participate in the Bhasma aarti in the Sawan month, but this year due to the pandemic, their participation has been restricted," said Bharat Sharma, a priest at the temple.

Earlier, Sharma had said, "Devotees can only do darshan from a distance between 5.30 am and 9 pm. The Mahakal Temple Committee has made arrangements for 10,000 devotees to have darshan daily."

Before the aarti, the idol was bathed and anointed with Maha Panchamrit in which milk, curd, ghee, honey, and fruits. After that, the idol was decorated with bhang and sandalwood, following which ashes were anointed. The idol was then dressed after which the aarti was performed.

"We offered prayers for the welfare of our brothers at the Mahakaleshwar Temple on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan today," said Kumari Srishti Sharma, a devotee.
