It is noted Karthiyayini Amma from Alappuzha and 106-year-old Bhageerathi Amma had, recently, cleared class 4 equivalence examination conducted by Kerala Literacy Mission. As both have proven that age is not a barrier to attain success, the Indian Government had announced this prestigious honour to these grannies.

While Nonagenarian Karthiyayini Amma visited Rashtrapathi Bhavan and received the award from the President, Bhageerathi Amma could not come because of age-related ailments. The centenarian, however, sent her representative to collect the Nari Shakti Puraskar award from the President.

As the name of Karthiyayini Amma was read out, the audience gave a standing ovation until she reached the stage.

Kerala government had taken the initiative of Kerala Literacy Mission to wipe out illiteracy. After clearing the Class IV equivalence examination, Bhageerathi became the most elderly literate woman in the country.
