New Delhi: Marathi Film producer Nilesh Navalakha on Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking the establishment of an independent Media Tribunal for complaints regarding media houses filed by viewers. He contended that self-regulation can not solve the present situation of media and therefore an independent tribunal is needed.

"Over the last few years, media trials, hate speech, propaganda news, paid news, have become the order of the day, thereby impeding the right to a fair and proportionate reporting," read the plea.

He said that there needs to be a balance in freedom of speech and expression, right to information and right to Dignity.

"It is submitted that reckless reportage by the Electronic Media without accountability can, by no stretch of the imagination, be read the right to freedom of speech and expression enjoyed by the Electronic Media," read the plea.

Navalkha has sought directions to constitute a High Powered Committee headed by a former Chief Justice or Judge of the Supreme Court or High Court. For the other members, he has sought inclusion of representatives from the central government and citizens from various fields who can review the regulation and also recommend guidelines for media.
