Patna people stage protest, seek justice for former village chief

Expressing anger over the alleged murder of a former village chief Sanjay Verma in Paliganj, the protestors staged a dharna and sought action against the miscreants. People burnt tyres and also raised slogans against the police administration over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

Patna: Hours after former village chief Sanjay Verma was shot dead in Paliganj, people staged a protest and sought strict action against the accused. Agitated people protested under Dulhin Bazar police station limits and the area witnessed a high voltage drama.

People shouted slogans against the police administration and sought the arrest of the accused. Tyres were also burnt by the irked protestors and shopkeepers were also intimidated to shut down their shops.

In the wee hours on Sunday, a former village chief Sanjay Verma was allegedly shot dead by unidentified assailants in Patna's Paligaj while he was on a morning walk. The assailants were riding a motorcycle. The incident took place at the Dulhan Bazar police station area of Paliganj block, the police had said.

Prashant Verma, JD(U) Block chief, said, "We are protesting because we want the accused who killed Sanjay Verma to be arrested. Police have not initiated an action in this case. Verma served as village chief for fifteen years."

"Former village chief Sanjay Verma was shot dead by few unidentified miscreants at 4 a.m. in the morning today. We rushed him to the hospital but he could not survive," said Chandan Kushwaha who participated in the protest.

Kushwaha added, "This is not the first instance of law and order breakdown order in our area. Various incidents happened in the past but no action was taken by the police. We want justice for Verma."

"The protestors have been protesting for long hours but no police force was seen in the area," he said.

The incident comes hours after the third and final phase of Bihar Assembly elections concluded. Assembly for 243-assembly seats was held in three phases on October 28, November 3 and November 7. The counting of votes will take place on November 10.
