According to media reports, the building was neither historical, nor in any way related to Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. The reports suggest that the building was owned by a 'rich' Sikh man named Nanak Singh who left for India after the partition in 1947. The Pakistani media has also issued justification on the same.

The building is said to be about 400 years old and was illegally sold by a few men. The office of Assistant Commissioner of Narowal recommended to lodge an FIR against two persons, Ranjha and Punnu, for selling the building.

Meanwhile, the possession of Nanak Mahal has been haded over to the cultural heritage department to avoid any further illegal occupation.

According to earlier reports, a group of locals partially demolished the centuries-old building and sold off its precious windows, doors and ventilators in Narowal, around 100 km away from Lahore, the capital of Pakistan's Punjab province.

The walls surrounding the building showcased pictures of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak as well as of various Hindu rulers and princes. There were 16 large rooms in the building, all of which had at least three beautiful doors and as many as four ventilators, said reports.

The rooms had large broad walls with cupboards in them with wooden doors and flowers carved on them.

Residents of the area had requested Prime Minister Imran Khan to take action against those who demolished it.
