New Delhi: Onion, the staple vegetable, would continue to be in short supply in the country as whatever amount of it is being imported from other nations has failed to meet the huge demand of the agricultural product.
An expert and farmers' leader Pushpendra Chowdhary told ETV Bharat here that the problem would continue for some more time as the imported amount of onion is failing to meet the demand.
"The government has purchased onions from various countries but it's not enough," he said, adding that the situation would improve only after the next crop of onions come into the market.
He said onions, potatoes and tomatoes are three important vegetables that form 50 per cent of the total vegetables grown and eaten in India.
"It's not that the vegetables produced in India are not enough for home consumption. We were, in fact, exporting onions last year," he said, adding that the government must improve the storage infrastructure as the crop cannot be produced every day.
"We are growing more than the requirement but it has to be stored properly, so when in need, it could be taken from the storage," said.
Chowdhary said it would help both - the farmers and the consumers.
