Newly-appointed EC Rajiv Kumar formally welcomed by poll body

Rajiv Kumar, who earlier this week took charge as the Election Commissioner, was formally welcomed by Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora and Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra at the poll body's meeting today.

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India formally welcomed newly-appointed Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar at its meeting on Thursday.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora, and Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra, formally welcomed Kumar. Other officers of the Commission, including Secretary General Umesh Sinha, DECs, Directors and Senior Principal Secretaries were also present on the occasion, an official statement said.

Welcoming Kumar, the CEC recalled his rich administrative experience across a range of sectors, especially DoPT, Banking and Finance. He appreciated the path-breaking work done by Rajiv Kumar in his earlier assignments. He said the Commission will be immensely benefited by his rich experience.

In his remarks, Kumar said that he felt extremely privileged and humbled by the graceful gesture. He also spoke of the importance of robust Institutions of governance, and said he will try to give his best to the Commission, the statement said.

Kumar, a retired 1984-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, replaced Ashok Lavasa as the Election Commissioner.

Kumar will have a five-year tenure and retire in 2025. He will preside over the next Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

During the span of more than 36 years of service, Kumar has worked in various ministries at the Centre and his state cadre of earlier Bihar and then Jharkhand.

He retired as the union finance secretary in February this year and was appointed chairperson of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) on April 29.
