New Delhi: Rajya Sabha member from Punjab Pratap Singh Bajwa requested Union Minister for Human Resource Development to reconsider guidelines for exit examination of final semester students.
Pointing towards an increasing number of cases of COVID-19 in India, Bajwa termed new guidelines as a 'recipe for disaster'.
In a letter to Union Minister he wrote, "Examinations being made compulsory for the final semester students at this moment will not be a fair representation of their skills or competence as described."
It is unbelievable that this is the only solution that the UGC can come up despite the expert committee being formed in April 2020.
It should be noted that 7 state governments across the country including Punjab and Maharashtra have cancelled these exams keeping in mind public health and safety. The new guidelines will only increase the confusion and stress faced by students, he added.
Punjab MP also said that examinations should not be the sole measurement tool for our students and education system must be flexible at this moment in time.
In a meeting held on Monday, UGC decided to advise universities and colleges to conduct final semester exams by September-end.
UGC first released an indicative academic calendar for higher education institutions on April 29 in which it had prescribed that universities conduct their final-year or terminal semester examination from July 1 to July 15 and declare their results end of the month.
