Nepal halts water supply at Indo-Nepal border

इंडो-नेपाल भिखनाठोड़ी बॉर्डर पर नेपाल ने भारत में सप्लाई होने वाले पानी पर रोक लगा दी है. इसको लेकर बॉर्डर पर तनाव का माहौल है. वहीं, हजारों किसान बॉर्डर पर प्रदर्शन कर रहे हैं.

Nepal imposes a ban on water supply along Indo-Nepal border

West Champaran: Amid the on-going political crisis between India and Nepal, the latter has imposed a ban on the supply of water from water canals near Bhikhna Thori railway station which has triggered outrage among the farmers and has affected seven villages.

As per the information, Nepal administrators and contractors have blocked the water canals, adjacent to the Indian border by putting stones and sand in it. Both the water channels are a major source of irrigation for seven villages which covers 1000 acres of land.

As soon as the incident came to light, Indian and SSB officials reached the area and tried to pacify the situation by holding talks with Nepali officials.

Nepal's Armed Border Patrol Inspector Deepak Dal said, "Water channels were constructed near the bridge. So, we filled the canals with sand and stones".

HISTORY

It is to noted that an agreement was signed between India and Nepal in 2013 which stated that two water canals from Pandai river will supply 30% of water to the Indian villages surrounding it. Tension sparked when the third tunnel was filled with sand and stones.

"From now on, only one water canal will supply water to nearby Indian villages. If Indian farmers wish, they can built another channel with the help of one already present. We have filled the canal for bridge approach.", said Dal.

Farmers have staged a protest demanding the opening of both the channels which has escalated the tension along the Indo-Nepal border.
