New Delhi: Senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP, K.T.S. Tulsi on Thursday slammed the union government after the former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi sworn-in as the Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha.

In the wake of Narendra Modi government's move to nominate Ranjan Gogoi to the Rajya Sabha only four months after his retirement as the Chief Justice of India, opposition party leaders and activists criticised the decision and chose to walkout from the session while raising slogans of "shame".

Speaking to ETV Bharat Tulsi said, "It disturbs the constitutional balance and independence of judiciary, Justice Gogoi himself, in various speeches and lectures, condemned outrightly for any post retirement benefits being given to CJI or any other judges. So, there is a divergence between what he says and what he does."

He also cited a judgement of Supreme Court by Justice Deepak Gupta in which the constitutional bench said, "One cannot expect justice from those who are on the verge of retirement, through the corridor of power, looking for post-retirement sinecures."

Being at the receiving end of much criticism, in his defense, Justice Gogoi said that his presence in Parliament "will be an opportunity to project the views of judiciary before the legislative and vice versa."
