New Delhi: In a significant development, the Union Home Ministry has constituted two special committees to deal with the functioning of central armed police forces (CAPF).

According to government sources, the two committees will deal with issues and approvals related to the CAPF. One committee will deal with issues between Home Ministry and CAPF will be headed by Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla whereas the other committee will be headed by secretary (border management) NN Sinha.

The second committee will only deal with procurement matters, officials said.

"The committees will ensure effective coordination and monitoring of CAPF activities like anti Naxal operations, Border Security, procurement of modern assault weapons among others," officials said.

The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) are also known as paramilitary forces and comprise the Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and Sashastra Seema Bal.

Though the Assam Rifles is not a CAPF, issues related to the force will also be dealt with by these two committees, which were constituted last week. According to the MHA's directions, these committees are special and hence "routine matters" will not be taken up in their meetings. Heads of these two committees will have regular meetings with DG of all the CAPFs, sources added.
