New Delhi: Manjinder Singh Sirsa, president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, on Thursday said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has made it clear that it was the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who let the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 go on.
Dr Manmohan Singh has made it very clear in his statement that the riots could have been avoided if Narsimha Rao had listened to I K Gujral's advice.
"Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister at that time. It's him who should have called in the army and not the Home Minister," Sirsa told ETV Bharat here.
Reacting to the statement of Singh, wherein he had said: "When the sad event of 1984 took place, Gujral ji that very evening went to the then home minister Narsimha Rao and told him that the situation is so grim that it is necessary for the government to call the Army at the earliest. If that advice was heeded, the massacre that took place in 1984 could perhaps have been avoided".
Reacting to it, Sirsa said the former Prime Minister made it obvious that it was Rajiv Gandhi, who let it go unchecked.
On whether the comment was made keeping in mind the upcoming elections of Delhi, the Sikh leader said: "whatever may the intention but it has been made clear that it was Rajiv Gandhi who let the Sikhs die."
