Raut said Shiv Sena would be happy if BJP conveys that it has 145 seats

Raut says BJP should stake claim to form govt, show majority

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said that BJP should stake claim to form the government in Maharashtra as it is the single largest party and noted  his party will welcome any statement from Congress for formation of non-BJP alternative in the state.

"We met the Maharashtra Governor. Republican Party of India's Ramdas Athawale also met him. If BJP leaders are meeting the Governor tomorrow to stake claim to form the government as the single largest party, they should convey that they have the majority number of 145. We would be very happy," Raut told reporters.

The mandate is for BJP-Sena, we will work as responsible opposition: Sharad Pawar

"I have nothing much to speak on the state's current political scenario. People have given the mandate to BJP-Sena and they should form the government as soon as possible. The mandate for Congress-NCP is to play the role of an effective Opposition," said NCP chief Sharad Pawar.

"There is only one option, which is that the BJP and Shiv Sena should form the government. There is no other option other than this to avoid President's rule," he added.

RSS chief Bhagwat met Devendra Fadnavis yesterday

As a political slugfest over government formation continues and with the deadline to form the government just around the corner, outgoing Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis met RSS chief Mohan Bhagwan here on Tuesday.

The duo held a closed-door meeting at RSS headquarters here for over an hour late in the night. The meeting bears significance with the tenure of the incumbent Assembly ends on November 8.

BJP and Shiv Sena are engaged in a bitter tug-of-war with the latter refusing to soften stand on its demands for equal sharing of Cabinet portfolios and the chief minster's tenure of 2.5 years. However, Fadnavis has said that Shiv Sena was not promised the chief ministerial post for two-and-a-half years when the alliance was sealed before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Mumbai: Amid the stand-off over government formation in Maharashtra, senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut meet NCP chief Sharad Pawar in Mumbai on Wednesday.
"This was a courtesy call," Raut told reporters later.

The BJP and the Shiv Sena are locked in a bitter tussle over the sharing of the chief minister's post and ministerial portfolios in new government in the state.

There has been no headway in government formation after results of the state Assembly polls were declared on October 24 in which the BJP won 105 seats, Shiv Sena-56, NCP- 54 and Congress-44.

Raut, who is a Rajya Sabha member, earlier said his party was firm on a written assurance from the senior alliance partner over power-sharing, including rotation of the chief minister's post for two-and-a-half years.

He also claimed that there was a "consensus" between the BJP and the Shiv before the Maharashtra Assembly polls on sharing the chief minister's post.

The NCP on Tuesday said a political alternative can be worked out in the state if the Shiv Sena declared that it had snapped ties with the BJP.

Sources in the NCP said their party wants Arvind Sawant, the lone Shiv Sena minister in the Union government, to resign before going ahead further with the Uddhav Thackeray-led party.
