Paswan's daughter, son-in-law protest denial of entry inside Patna airport to receive his body

Patna: Former Union minister Ramvilas Paswan's daughter from his first wife and her husband staged a protest at Patna Airport on Friday after they were not allowed entry inside to receive the body of the departed leader.

Paswan's daughter Asha Devi and her husband Anil Sadhu protested in front of the car of Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi when he had come to receive the body of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) founder.

'Why politics is being played on such a sad occasion? Why his daughter and family members are not allowed entry inside the airport?' Paswan's son-in-law told reporters.

Sadhu is presently associated with Lalu Prasad's RJD.

Asha Devi also fumed at the district administration for preventing her from going inside the airport.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has also come to the airport to receive the body of the veteran leader.

Officials said that only selected people are permitted to go inside the airport in view of security considerations.

Asha Devi is the daughter of Paswan from his first wife Raj Kumari Devi, who still lives in their native Saharbanni village in Khagaria district of Bihar.

Besides Asha Devi, Usha Devi is another daughter of the departed leader from his first wife.

Paswan had married Raj Kumari Devi in 1960s. In 2014, he disclosed that he had divorced her in 1981, after his Lok Sabha nomination papers were challenged.

In 1983, he had married Reena Sharma, an air hostess and a Punjabi Hindu from Amritsar. They have a son and a daughter. His son Chirag Paswan is heading the LJP at present.

From the Jay Prakash Narayan Airport, his body will be taken to the Bihar Legislative Assembly premises where legislators and others will pay respect to him.

From there, his mortal remains will be taken to the LJP headquarters in the state capital where it will be kept in the night, party sources said.

He will be cremated on the bank of the river Ganga at Digha ghat with full state honours on Saturday.

Ram Vilas Paswan was born to Late Shri Jamun Paswan and Late Siya Devi in a Dalit family in Shaharbanni village on July 5, 1946.

Paswan, who held a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Arts degrees, started his innings in electoral politics with a win from Alauli Assembly seat in 1969 on Samyukta Socialist Party ticket.

The leader had hit the national headlines after winning the 1977 Lok Sabha election from Hajipur seat with a record margin of votes on Janata Party ticket. Since then, he represented Hajipur seat for eight times.

New Delhi: Following the death of LJP leader and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, the Union Cabinet is left with no representation from NDA allies, while Ramdas Athawale of Republican Party of India (RPI) is the only member in the Union Council of Ministers from an ally party in the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre. 

Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena), Harsimrat Kaur Badal (Shiromani Akali Dal) and Ram Vilas Paswan (Lok Janshakti Party) were representatives of NDA allies in the Union Cabinet when the Modi 2.0 government returned to power in 2019 following Lok Sabha elections. 

While the Shiv Sena quit the NDA in late 2019, SAD left the alliance recently over farm bills.

New Delhi: Former prime minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said the country has lost one of the greatest Dalit and socialist leaders in Ram Vilas Paswan. Paswan (74), the Union minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, died at a hospital in Delhi on Thursday, days after he underwent a heart surgery.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also paid his last tributes to the departed leader and visited the latter's place.

Gandhi said Paswan raised voice for the most marginalised sections in society and left a lasting imprint on politics and public service in both Bihar and the country.

In a letter to Chirag Paswan, son of the late Union minister, Manmohan Singh described him as an important Dalit face in the central government.

"In his death our country has lost one of its greatest Dalit and socialist leaders, who always stood for the cause of the poor and downtrodden people of the society," Singh said in his condolences.

"Ram Vilas Paswan ji was a very important Dalit face in the central government, of many parties. I have very warm recollections of my association with Shri Paswan ji as a member of the UPA Government which I led in 2004.

"The veteran socialist leader, Paswan ji was also a very efficient administrator who worked very closely with me as Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers, and also served as minister in various ministries," the former PM said.

Singh said Paswan was a mass leader which is evident from the fact that he won Parliament elections with a record majority from his constituency.

He said Paswan was also a leader who was loved and respected by all with whom he came into contact with, irrespective of their political leniency.

Rahul Gandhi, in a letter to Chirag Paswan, said he was deeply saddened by the sudden demise of his father.

"We have lost a veteran leader who left a lasting imprint on politics and public service in both Bihar and our nation.

"In an illustrious public life spanning over five decades, he was the voice of the most marginalised sections of our society and defended the rights of the poor and the vulnerable," he said in his letter.

Gandhi said as a Member of Parliament and Union minister, Paswan voiced the interests and concerns of the poor with passion.

"His unwavering commitment to social justice and equality is particularly relevant in these times. His enduring legacy will continue to inspire people dedicated to public service," the Congress leader added.

New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the residence of his late cabinet colleague Ram Vilas Paswan and paid his last respects to the departed leader on Friday. 

Paswan, 74, passed away at a private hospital here on Thursday. The Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution had recently undergone heart surgery. 

"Paid tributes to our senior Union Minister Shri Ram Vilas Paswan ji. Paswan ji will always be remembered as a person with gentle behaviour and for his work related to public welfare. May the grace of God be on him and may his family have the strength to bear this loss," Shah tweeted in Hindi.

New Delhi:  Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan's mortal remains will be flown to Patna on Friday evening and his last rites will be performed there, said the family members.

The last rites will be held on Saturday afternoon. Paswan passed away on Thursday in a Delhi hospital.

According to the family members of the founder of the Lok Jan Shakti Party (LJP), Paswan's mortal remains will be flown to Patna by a flight at 5 p.m. and then it will be taken to the Bihar Assembly. From there the mortal remains will be brought to the LJP headquarters, and party supporters will be allowed to pay their last respects till 10.30 p.m.

The mortal remains of Ram Vilas Paswan will then be brought to his residence in Patna's Boring road. From 8 a.m. Saturday, the general public will be allowed to pay their last respects, and the cremation will take place with full state honours at 1.30 p.m. at the Janardan Ghat in Patna.

Ram Vilas Paswan breathed his last on Thursday night at a Delhi hospital, where he had been admitted for several days. He underwent heart surgery last weekend. The news of his death was announced by Chirag Paswan.

Earlier in the day, the mortal remains of the late leader were brought to his residence in Delhi's 12 Janpath. President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Giriraj Singh, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Prakash Javadekar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar, CPI leader D. Raja and several other leaders paid their tributes.

A huge crowd was gathered outside Ram Vilas Paswan's residence to pay their last respects to the Dalit leader.

Cabinet condoles demise of Ram Vilas Paswan

New Delhi:  Union Cabinet on Friday condoled the sad demise of Consumer Affairs and Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan.

As per convention, the Cabinet passed a resolution, condoling the demise of the Lok Janshakti Party founder and veteran dalit leader from Bihar.

"In his passing away, the nation has lost an eminent leader, a distinguished parliamentarian and an able administrator," the Cabinet said.

Paswan was the voice of the oppressed and always championed the cause of marginalized sections of the society, it said.

"The Cabinet extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the government and the entire nation," it added.

The Cabinet observed silence for two minutes in the memory of Paswan, an official statement said.

The Cabinet also approved a state funeral to Paswan.

When towering leaders pass away, the Cabinet meets to condole their demise and pass a resolution.

Paswan, 74, died on October 8, in a Delhi hospital following cardiac ailments and kidney failure.

An eight-time Lok Sabha MP, Paswan was a minister in central governments headed by parties of different ideologies ranging from the Janata Dal to the Congress and the BJP since 1989.

Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will represent the central government at the funeral of Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, reports said quoting sources.

At a specially convened meeting of the Union Cabinet on Friday morning, it was reportedly decided that Prasad would represent the government of India and the Union Council of Ministers at the funeral of the veteran leader who died here on Thursday evening, they said.

The government meanwhile has announced that Paswan's funeral will be conducted with full state honours.

The funeral is likely to take place in Patna on Saturday. According to reports, Paswan's mortal remains would be flown to Patna in a special aircraft.

New Delhi: Mortal remains of Union Minister and LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan, who passed away yesterday, were on Friday taken to his residence.

The mortal remains of the LJP leader, who passed away after recently undergoing a heart operation, arrived at his residence today morning from AIIMS.

Announcing the minister's demise, his son Chirag Paswan tweeted, "Papa, you are no more in this world but I know you are with me wherever you are. Miss you papa."

Born in Khagaria in 1946, Paswan was selected as a police official but chose the calling of politics and became an MLA for the first time in 1969 on a Samyukta Socialist Party ticket.

He was elected to Lok Sabha eight times and also held the record of winning his constituency, Hajipur, with the highest margin for several years.

Always at the forefront of raising issues concerning the disadvantaged sections of society, he was also a skilful grassroots politician who enjoyed good equations with leaders across the spectrum, and his dedicated following in his state ensured that every national party courted him in his over five decades of career.

He was a minister in central governments headed by parties of contrasting ideological persuasions, ranging from the Janata Dal to the Congress and the BJP, since 1989.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today wrote to Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) chief Chirag Paswan expressing grief at the passing away of his father and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan. Terming the veteran leader as a person who "left a lasting imprint on politics and public service in both Bihar" and the country, Gandhi remembered his illustrious public life and his fight for the marginalized sections of the society. "I am deeply saddened by the sudden demise of your father Shri Ram Vilas Paswan. We have lost a veteran leader who left a lasting imprint on politics and public service in both Bihar and our nation. In an illustrious public life spanning over five decades, he gave voice to the most marginalized sections of our society and defended the rights of the poor and the vulnerable," Gandhi said in the letter.

Paswan to be cremated with state honours, Ravi Shankar Prasad to represent central govt

Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will represent the central government at the funeral of Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, reports said quoting sources.

At a specially convened meeting of the Union Cabinet on Friday morning, it was reportedly decided that Prasad would represent the government of India and the Union Council of Ministers at the funeral of the veteran leader who died here on Thursday evening, they said.

The government meanwhile has announced that Paswan's funeral will be conducted with full state honours.

The funeral is likely to take place in Patna on Saturday. According to reports, Paswan's mortal remains would be flown to Patna in a special aircraft.

The Cabinet passed a resolution, condoling the demise of the Lok Janshakti Party founder and veteran dalit leader from Bihar.

New Delhi: Mortal remains of Union Minister and LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan, who passed away yesterday, were on Friday taken to his residence.

The mortal remains of the LJP leader, who passed away after recently undergoing a heart operation, arrived at his residence today morning from AIIMS.

Announcing the minister's demise, his son Chirag Paswan tweeted, "Papa, you are no more in this world but I know you are with me wherever you are. Miss you papa."

Born in Khagaria in 1946, Paswan was selected as a police official but chose the calling of politics and became an MLA for the first time in 1969 on a Samyukta Socialist Party ticket.

He was elected to Lok Sabha eight times and also held the record of winning his constituency, Hajipur, with the highest margin for several years.

Always at the forefront of raising issues concerning the disadvantaged sections of society, he was also a skilful grassroots politician who enjoyed good equations with leaders across the spectrum, and his dedicated following in his state ensured that every national party courted him in his over five decades of career.

He was a minister in central governments headed by parties of contrasting ideological persuasions, ranging from the Janata Dal to the Congress and the BJP, since 1989.
