Mahatma Gandhi spent his life promoting the message of preventive healthcare, and following measures like social distancing and wearing masks conscientiously will be a prominent way to foster ease of living in COVID-19 times, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said on Friday.
          

Meanwhile, the ICMR is on its toes to find out pharmacological solutions and for developing a vaccine to fight this virus, Bhargava said as he highlighted the relevance of Gandhian values of "Less is more" and "Health is wealth", especially in the times of crisis. Bhargava made these remarks at a webinaron 'Gandhi's Perspective in Relevance to Health Crisis' organised on Gandhi Jayanti by the Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR).
          

An e-photo album with Gandhi's quotes and a compendium of initiatives undertaken by ICMR in collaboration with National Gandhi Museum during the two-year-long 150th birth anniversary celebration of Mahatma Gandhi were also released during the webinar.

Gandhi Jayanti: Guj Sabarmati jail inmates get 'Radio Prison'

Some 3,000 inmates of Gujarat's Sabarmati Central Jail got a Gandhi Jayanti gift on Friday with authorities starting a dedicated radio station for them. 'Radio Prison', operating from the premises of the jail to provide information and entertainment to inmates, was inaugurated by Additional Director General of Police
(Prisons), KLN Rao.
         

"Along with entertainment, story-telling and cultural programmes, Radio Prison will provide information on legal aid, psychological counseling and training on different subjects. We will also transmit birthday wishes of inmates. Ten inmates have been chosen as radio jockeys to operate the initiative," Rao said.

Remember Gandhi's words; don't lose faith in humanity in testing times, says Naidu

In a world where incidents of terrorism and heinous crimes have shaken people up, one must remember Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of not losing faith in humanity, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said on Friday.
          

He also said that in a world raven with social, political, economic as well as environmental problems, revival of Gandhian ideals is the need of the hour. Naidu, who last week tested positive for COVID-19 and is under home isolation, made these remarks in a video message at an event organised by the Indian Council of World Affairs.
          

Noting that the world is facing one of the biggest health crises in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, he recalled that when the world experienced a similar challenge in 1918 during the Spanish Flu, Gandhi spoke about the need to understand the pain of all people, especially the poor and the underprivileged.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh said Friday that agriculture and rural prosperity were very close to Mahatma Gandhi's heart and he would have been the happiest man today with the new farm laws passed by the government.
         

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after 70 years of independence, "truly addressed" the village and farm-centric vision of Bapu' with the new agriculture sector reforms. Addressing a programme on "Mahatma Gandhi's Experiments with Swachhata - Key to Prosperity", he said the new farm laws will not only provide impetus to Indian agriculture to compete globally but will also help in doubling the income of farmers.
         

The programme was organised by Kendriya Bhandar and Centre for Strategy and Leadership at Vigyan Bhavan here, according to an official statement. Referring to the pro-farmer measures taken by the government in the last six years such as neem-coated urea, Soil Health Card, Kisan Credit Card, PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, Fasal Bima Yojana, Singh said these decisions are representative of democratisation of Indian agriculture as they provide freedom of choice to farmers for the first time.

Burj Khalifa to display Mahatma Gandhi's images on his 151st birth anniversary: Report

UAE's iconic skyscraper Burj Khalifa would display the images of Mahatma Gandhi as a tribute to the great Indian peace icon on his 151st birth anniversary, a media report said on Friday. The images of Gandhi would be displayed on Burj Khalifa with his relevant messages around 8.15 pm on Friday, the Gulf News reported, citing a tweet from the Indian Consulate in Dubai.

Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 is also marked as the International Day of Non-Violence on account of the non-violent strategy adopted by Gandhi to help India secure independence from the British colonial rule in 1947.

"The special Gandhi show on Burj Khalifa will be live-streamed on social media pages of the consulate.We are thankful to Emaar for their support," the report quoted an official of the Indian Consulate saying the paper earlier this week.

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) along with 70 indigenous groups and a regional party on Friday floated a political outfit to fight the Assam assembly
elections due next year, outgoing president of the peasant body Bhasco De Saikia said.
         

The new party, named 'Raijor Dal' (People's Party) was launched on Gandhi Jayanti and the birthday of jailed KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi at a press conference here.
         

The 70 indigenous groups and the regional party, the 'Sanjukta Anchalik Dal, Asom', were together during the anti Citizenship (Amendment) Act agitation.

Tributes paid to Gandhiji in TN, Puducherry; Kamaraj remembered
 

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purhoit, Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam on Friday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 151st birth anniversary. They paid floral tributes to a decorated portrait of the Father of the Nation placed near his statue on Kamarajar Salai close to the Marina Beach.
 

Later, at a function held in the Raj Bhavan campus, Purohit handed over a cheque of Rs 51 lakh to the state president of Harijan Sevak Sangh P Maruthi for construction of a new ladies hostel with all amenities. The Governor sanctioned the fund under his discretionary grant, an official release said. 
 

The Harijan Sevak Sangh's proposal is to accommodate 220 students, to provide free lodging facility to girls hailing from various sections of the society like the Adi-Dravidar (Scheduled Castes), Backward communities and Most Backward Community besides the economically poor families and other
deserving students to help them pursue education up to professional level. 
 

Purohit also inaugurated the Gandhi Jayanthi, Deepawali "rebate sale" of Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan and purchased Khadi goods. Palaniswami and Panneerselvam along with their Cabinet colleagues, including D Jayakumar, Dindigul C Sreenivasan and Sellur K Raju, took part in a Sarvodaya Sangh event here in honour of Gandhiji.
 

Palaniswami and his deputy also paid homage to the iconic former chief minister and freedom fighter K Kamaraj on his 45th death anniversary by placing a wreath together at the late leader's memorial here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 151st birth anniversary and said there is much to learn from his life and thoughts.

"We bow to beloved Bapu on Gandhi Jayanti. There is much to learn from his life and noble thoughts. May Bapu's ideals keep guiding us in creating a prosperous and compassionate India," the prime minister tweeted.

He also posted a short clip of his remarks on the father of the nation.

Gandhi was born on this day in 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. Gandhi Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who is popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi. The day is celebrated on October 2 every year and is officially declared a national holiday.

Mahatma Gandhi is known as the father of the nation. He played a significant role in the fight against Britishers and helped India gain its independence. He contributed to the freedom struggle of India through his non-violent ways and helped the nation get rid of age-old practices like untouchability too.

His philosophy and Nobel work made him gain the title of ‘Mahatma’ which literally means ‘Great Soul’. His ideologies and philosophy made him popular around the world. On June 15, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to declare October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence.

KMSS floats political party on Gandhi Jayanti
The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) along with 70 indigenous groups and a regional party on Friday floated a political outfit to fight the Assam assembly
elections due next year, outgoing president of the peasant body Bhasco De Saikia said.
         

The new party, named 'Raijor Dal' (People's Party) was launched on Gandhi Jayanti and the birthday of jailed KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi at a press conference here.
         

The 70 indigenous groups and the regional party, the 'Sanjukta Anchalik Dal, Asom', were together during the anti Citizenship (Amendment) Act agitation.

Tributes paid to Gandhiji in TN, Puducherry; Kamaraj remembered
 

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purhoit, Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam on Friday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his 151st birth anniversary. They paid floral tributes to a decorated portrait of the Father of the Nation placed near his statue on Kamarajar Salai close to the Marina Beach.
 

Later, at a function held in the Raj Bhavan campus, Purohit handed over a cheque of Rs 51 lakh to the state president of Harijan Sevak Sangh P Maruthi for construction of a new ladies hostel with all amenities. The Governor sanctioned the fund under his discretionary grant, an official release said. 
 

The Harijan Sevak Sangh's proposal is to accommodate 220 students, to provide free lodging facility to girls hailing from various sections of the society like the Adi-Dravidar (Scheduled Castes), Backward communities and Most Backward Community besides the economically poor families and other
deserving students to help them pursue education up to professional level. 
 

Purohit also inaugurated the Gandhi Jayanthi, Deepawali "rebate sale" of Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan and purchased Khadi goods. Palaniswami and Panneerselvam along with their Cabinet colleagues, including D Jayakumar, Dindigul C Sreenivasan and Sellur K Raju, took part in a Sarvodaya Sangh event here in honour of Gandhiji.
 

Palaniswami and his deputy also paid homage to the iconic former chief minister and freedom fighter K Kamaraj on his 45th death anniversary by placing a wreath together at the late leader's memorial here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 151st birth anniversary and said there is much to learn from his life and thoughts.

"We bow to beloved Bapu on Gandhi Jayanti. There is much to learn from his life and noble thoughts. May Bapu's ideals keep guiding us in creating a prosperous and compassionate India," the prime minister tweeted.

He also posted a short clip of his remarks on the father of the nation.

Gandhi was born on this day in 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat. Gandhi Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who is popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi. The day is celebrated on October 2 every year and is officially declared a national holiday.

Mahatma Gandhi is known as the father of the nation. He played a significant role in the fight against Britishers and helped India gain its independence. He contributed to the freedom struggle of India through his non-violent ways and helped the nation get rid of age-old practices like untouchability too.

His philosophy and Nobel work made him gain the title of ‘Mahatma’ which literally means ‘Great Soul’. His ideologies and philosophy made him popular around the world. On June 15, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to declare October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence.
