Kottayam: Even as the COVID pandemic has been chaotic and has badly affected the lives of people all over the world, on the flip side, the COVID lockdown has helped many discover their hidden talents and skills.

Two friends from Thidanadu, Erattupetta in Kottayam district of Kerala have come up with a mini crane which can be easily operated on a motor bike’s engine.

Dennis, a driver and Pramod, a daily wage labourer are behind the design and development of the mini crane. Dennis attempted to make a device to help Pramod, who usually goes for the work of digging wells, and finds it very tough to pull up the soil and rocks from within the well.

As Dennis and Pramod realised that whatever was found on Youtube videos were not practical and effective, they decided to design and make one on their own. It took the duo three months to complete the making of the mini crane.

The mini crane has been designed in such a way that it can turn in 360 degrees and lift and lower weight of up to 250 kilograms from a depth of 70 feet. It can be operated non-stop for about one and a half hours using one litre of petrol.

The crane can be easily operated by using the accelerator, clutch and brake, in the same way as one rides a bike.

Besides the bike’s engine, they used spare parts of different vehicles to complete the design and make it functional. A car radiator fan has also been fixed to the mini crane to avoid excessive heating up of the engine.

The mini crane engineered by the two friends has a capacity to lift or lower up to 250 kilograms from 70 feet depth. It can be dismantled into three parts to transport easily. It would be very useful in the construction sector. The making of the mini crane has cost them about Rs 60000.
