Section 144, which prohibits the assembly of more than four people in an area, was imposed by the Powai Police station with effect from July 9 to July 12 (both dates inclusive) because of "likelihood of breach of peace & disturbance of public tranquility".

The Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel where the rebel Cong-JD (S) MLAs have been camping falls within the jurisdiction of the Powai police station.

Mumbai: Congress leader DK Shivakumar arrived in Mumbai on Wednesday to meet and speak to the rebel MLAs camping at a five-star hotel in the city after submitting their resignations.

Shivakumar is accompanied by  JD(S) MLA Shivalinge Gowda.

Heavy security has been deployed outside Renaissance - Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel-after the rebel MLAs wrote a letter addressing the Mumbai Commissioner of Police to stop Shivakumar from entering the hotel as they felt "threatened". 

The letter has names of all the 10 MLAs with their signatures. They have also sent the letter to DCP, local police station Powai and management of Renaissance Hotel.
Mumbai authorities responded and the hotel has been turned into a garrison. Maharashtra State Reserve Police Force and Riot Control Police are deployed at the hotel located in Powai, Mumbai.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Northern Region) Dilip Sawant is also on the spot.

Meanwhile, Shivakumar, who had earlier torn the resignation letters submitted by the rebel MLAs, had left for Mumbai to meet and speak to the rebel lawmakers and convince them to withdraw their resignations. 

"Let Mumbai Police or any other force be deployed. Let them do their duty. We've come to meet our friends. We were born together in politics, we will die together in politics. They are our party men. We have come to meet them, " said Shivakumar.
