( ) Mylavaram reservoir is very closeby…. fertile farm lands are all around….. the Mandal center is at a stone’s throw distance…. a little further away is the Jammalamadugu constituency. In spite of all these advantages, that village is abandoned! Due to one murder, the entire village was vacated. No movement of people for the past three or four years….desolate houses with cracked walls, roads covered with wild trees and an eerie atmosphere welcomes the visitors. Only one person lives in this village in these conditions. Previously it was the couple…. but with the death of his wife recently, the old man is leading life alone here.

To have a look at such a village, one has to visit Dapperla in Jammalamadugu Mandal of Kadapa district. In the past, this was a flourishing village of 40 houses with 200 people (120 voters) with all facilities like cement roads, drinking water pipelines, electric poles, a government school, etc. Due to one unfortunate scuffle in a farm land dispute, a retired teacher, Devasahayam, was murdered in 1992. Unable to face the increased visits of police personnel for inquiries, one by one, all the families abandoned the village. The School was shifted to some other village. Against all these odds, one couple, Danam and Ranamma, dared to live alone in the village. With the death of his wife, Danam is the lone inhabitant of the village!

For the past ten months an old aged man, Danam, is living in the village. No Power supply. Yet he is adamant and does not want to leave his place of birth. He is surviving on the ration and old age pension granted by the government. At the moment there is an eerie silence in Dapperla village. Delapidated houses…..dull walls. Yet, noteworthy is the tenacity of the old man Danam, to live in his birth place till his last breath.

Many people are willing to relocate to the village if living conditions are improved. If the government restores facilities and infrastructure, the village can regain its past glory.
