Kannur: Amid the shortage of surgical and N 95 masks in the market, these women based in Taliparambu of Kannur District of Kerala have started cloth face mask and distributing them at an affordable cost to guard against the spread of the Coronavirus.
Six women associated with Samridhi cloth bag making project under Kudumbasree SHG are engaged in making these low-cost cloth masks. The cloth masks made by these women are priced at Rs 7.
As the Indian market faces a severe shortage of masks and the manufacturing companies have raised the prices exorbitantly blaming it on the situation, there are many buyers for these cloth masks made by this group.
The cloth bag making unit, run by these six women was started its operations two years ago after it was included as a Samridhi project by the Taliprambu MLA. Pariyaram Panchayat is also in full support of these women who have been making and marketing low-cost, environment-friendly cloth bags.
Unnecessary use of face masks can only create a sense of panic among the people. It has been recommended by the Health Department that only those with the symptoms of cough and common cold need to use face masks to prevent spreading it to others and those attending COVID-19 patients in isolation including medical professionals have to use N 95 masks.
