Kerala: At a time when environmentalists around the world are pointing towards the role of fossil fuels in aggravating the climate change crisis, a former physics teacher from Kerala has chosen a more environment-friendly mode of transport.

He bought an electric scooter which runs for about 30 kilometres at a speed of 25 kilometres per hour if charged for three and a half hours at a stretch.

Rajesh Akleth, who is now working as a manager at the Pramadam Netaji Higher Secondary School, uses his e-scooter every day to commute to work, leaving the passers-by in awe.

"In European countries, these scooters are very common and in the Middle East too, the children use these scooters a lot. We have not heard about anyone using it in Kerala, and the reason may be the difficulty in importing them by air, which is why I imported mine by ship," Akleth told ETV Bharat.

Apart from using his scooter for his daily commute, Akleth also uses his vehicle to teach children about environment-friendly alternatives to fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

"I introduced this scooter to the students at the school to help them better understand their chapters on energy crisis and conservation," said Akleth.

Intrigued by the two-wheeler, Akleth's students now vouch for the importance of opting for electronic vehicles in times of increasing pollution levels.

"The use of conventional vehicles lead to air pollution which in turn results in a variety of diseases, and the electric scooter will put an end to the problem of air pollution," said one of the students.

Akleth now hopes that his experiment would inspire others as well.
