'Karnataka, Tamil Nadu register maximum deaths due to over speeding in 2019'

As per the latest National Crime Records Bureau records, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have registered maximum road accidents due to over speeding in 2019 whereas Uttar Pradesh and Maharastra registered maximum deaths due to careless driving. n the other hand, the maximum decrease was reported in Tamil Nadu.

New Delhi: Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have registered maximum road accidents due to over speeding in 2019 whereas Uttar Pradesh and Maharastra registered maximum deaths due to careless driving, said the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) records.

Karnataka registered 10.8 per cent (9314 death out of a total of 86241) and Tamil Nadu registered 10.2 per cent (8832 out of 86241 deaths).

Maximum fatalities due to driving under influence of drug and alcohol were reported in Uttar Pradesh (28.6 per cent) followed by Jharkhand (13.9 per cent), Madhya Pradesh (6.7 per cent) and Telangana (6.0 per cent) during 2019.

The NCRB statistics said that maximum increase in the number of traffic accidents cases in states from 2018 to 2019 was reported in Madhya Pradesh (49080 to 53379) followed by Rajasthan (22401 to 24281) and Uttar Pradesh (40783 to 42368).

On the other hand, the maximum decrease was reported in Tamil Nadu (66110 to 59499).

The NCRB, however, collected data on "Traffic Accidents" comprising of road accidents, railway accidents and railway crossing accidents which accounted to 4,67,171 In 2019 which is a little decrease from the previous year's number of 4,74,638.

These traffic accidents resulted in injuries to 4,42,996 persons and 1,81,113 deaths during 2019.

Uttar Pradesh (27661), Maharastra (18524) and Madhya Pradesh (13497) have reported maximum fatalities in traffic accidents in the country. These three states accounted for 15.3 per cent, 10.2 per cent and 7.5 per cent total deaths in traffic accidents.

The traffic accidents comprise of 4,37,396 road accidents, 27,987 railway accidents and 1788 railway crossing accidents and caused 154732, 24619 and 1762 deaths respectively during 2019.

Significantly, time of occurrence wise analysis of traffic accidents conducted by NCRB revealed that the maximum number of "traffic accidents" have taken place during 18:00 hrs to 21:00 hrs and 15:00 hrs to 18:00 hrs.

The statistics further revealed that a total of 437396 road accident cases were reported during 2019.

Although the road accident cases have decreased from 445514 in 2018 to 437396 in 2019, the statistics said that the fatalities in road accidents have increased by 1.3 per cent (from 152780 in 2018 to 154732 in 2019).

During 2019, two-wheelers have accounted for maximum fatal road accidents (58747 deaths), contributing 38.0 per cent of total road accidental deaths, followed by truck/lorries (22637 deaths 14.6 per cent), cars (21196 deaths 13.7 per cent) and buses (9192 deaths 5.9 per cent).

The NCRB statistics said that a total of 27,987 cases of railway accidents were reported showing an increase of 1.2 per cent during the year 2019 over 2018 (27643).

As many as 3569 persons were injured and 24,619 deaths occurred during 2019 in railway accidents.

The NCRB statistics further said that a total of 47 accidental deaths were reported at the un-manned railway crossing and 51.1 per cent of such deaths were reported in Tripura (24 out of 47 deaths).
