New Delhi: The Union Jal Shakti Ministry has asked the states to advise communities in hilly stations to follow contour bunding rainwater harvesting method. The move has been taken to increase the groundwater level in the hilly regions.

According to the sources with the ministry, the government is firmly working with states to implement the rainwater harvesting method across the country.

"Though it is easy to save water in plain areas, it is a complex process in the hilly region. During monsoon seasons hill stations are getting abundant rainfall. But, harvesting is hard to achieve in hill stations. After consulting with water experts, the government decided to do contour bunds," a senior officer said.

"Contour bunding is a water management practice which would help to increase the soil moisture. Constructing narrow-based trapezoidal embankments along the contour to impound water behind them will help to infiltrate water into the soil. This method will ease to recharge groundwater in the hill station," a report of Jal Shakti ministry reads.

It further says this method will reduce the velocity of surface runoff and all the rainfall received will be stored between the bunch which will go into the soil.

Communication has been passed to the state government on this. The union government advised states to implement this without causing any destructions to the nature in hill stations.
