J&K to be developed on pattern of northeastern region of India: Jitendra Singh

Union Government plans to develop Jammu and Kashmir on the lines of northeastern region of the country. Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has come up with plans to develop it.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) is all set to replicate Northeast success model in Jammu and Kashmir. It has decided to setup an Apple and Strawberry Food Park there.

"We will set up Apple and Strawberry food park in Jammu and Kashmir. This will be on the lines of Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Mizoram," DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh told ETV Bharat here.

He said Apple and Strawberry from the food park will then be exported to the countries across the world. The decision to this effect was taken after the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation the erstwhile into two Union Territories last month.

DoNER Ministry has set up "Centre of Excellence" for Citrus Fruits in Mizoram in collaboration with the Government of Israel. The CoE provides planting material and training to farmers. Singh said both northeast and Jammu Kashmir share topographical and geographical similarities.

" A well-established connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir could be an added advantage for the region," he added. The minister also informed about plans of his ministry to establish a cold desert centre in Ladakh. "With its distinct features, Ladakh has vast potential," he said.

Workshops concerning the planned work would also be held in the region after some time. Narendra Modi government, in last 100 days, have sanctioned 110 projects worth Rs. 1699.69 crore for development of the Northeast region of the country.

The strategy to replicate Northeast success stories in Jammu & Kashmir has been evolved after a high level team from DoNER ministry visited J&K and explore possibilities to tap the potential of the region.

In fact, DONER ministry took the decision following the abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation J&K in to two Union Territores.

DoNER ministry has set up "Centre of Excellence" for Citrus Fruits in Mizoram in joint collaboration with Government of Israel. The CoE provide planting material and training to farmers and it has the speciality in processing Citrus fruits.

Dr Singh said that both northeast and J&K share topographical and geographical similarities. " A well established connectivity in J&K could be an added advantage for the region," said Dr Singh.

"We can also initiate venture funds for start-ups as well as rural livelihood projects in J&K," said DoNER Minister.


Conclusion:Dr Singh said that his ministry is also planning to establish a cold desert centre in Ladakh.

"With its distinct features, Ladakh has vast potential to get explored," said Dr Singh.

The minister said that his ministry will conduct workshops in J&K after both J&K and Ladakh bacome Union Territories.

Ever since the Narendra Modi Government came to power lots of developmental initiatives have been taken by the DoNER ministry for the landlocked northeastern states.

In its second term, Modi government in last 100 days have sanctioned 110 projects costing Rs 1699.69 crore for the development of Northeast. The projects include road constructions, water supply, tourism, sports complex, educational institutions among others.
