New Delhi: After Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit raised questions about the delay in finding a new president, his fellow party colleague Randeep Surjewala shot back at him, asking him to concentrate on his own constituency, here on Thursday.

Surjewala said leaders need to introspect

Addressing a press conference, Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala urged his fellow party colleagues to introspect on the Delhi election results, where the party failed to win even a single seat.

"I want to repeat this for all leaders in Delhi, including Sandeep ji, we need to introspect on the Delhi election result. How many votes have we got? We need to think about why we lost the election," he said.

Taking a potshot at Dikshit, son of late former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Surjewala said that he was putting a lot of efforts in putting things out on social media.

"He is very wise, and is like an older brother to me. If he puts all this effort in his constituency in Delhi, if he works as hard as he used to during late Sheila Dikshit's regime, I am sure Congress will win the elections," he said.

Asking party colleagues to not give "advice" to the entire nation, Surjewala urged them to start working in their constituencies.

Earlier in the day, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor had urged the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to hold leadership elections to "energise workers and inspire voters".

Tharoor's appeal came in support of his party colleague and former MP Sandeep Dikshit's remarks that the biggest challenge the party faces is the "leadership question".

  • Some have asked who should vote & for what. I was referring to my earlier call eight months ago for elections among the 10,000 party workers who constitute the “AICC plus PCC delegates” list. These should be for the elected seats in the CWC as well as for the Party Presidency.

Dikshit has accused senior leaders of failing to find a new president after all these months because they are "scared who will bell the cat".

Responding to Tharoor's comments, Surjewala said, "The party president is always chosen at the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting, and the same happened even the last time. Whoever has any misconceptions, should read the CWC's recommendations."

According to sources, the new Congress president might be chosen by the end of next month. Though many leaders want Rahul Gandhi to return as the president, he is seemingly not keen on doing so.
