New Delhi: Budget carrier IndiGo has completed the mandatory engine replacement of Pratt and Whitney (PW)-powered A320neo aircraft, before the August 31 deadline set by the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), sources told ETV Bharat.

The Pratt and Whitney (PW) engines powering Airbus A320neo planes in IndiGo and GoAir were facing glitches both mid-air and on-ground since their induction in 2016, following which the DGCA had asked Indigo and GoAir to install modified engines.

PW had identified fracture of the MTF piston steel as the cause of 50 per cent of engine failures.

The DGCA had on June 1 extended its May 31 deadline for refurbished engines in A320Neos to August 31 after supply chains and production lines were hit owing to the ongoing pandemic.

The two airlines started replacing the engines on time but the lockdown imposed since March 25 to contain Covid-19 had stalled the efforts.

IndiGo operates over 257 aircraft including 106 Airbus A320/321Neos. As per officials, IndiGo has installed 256 modified engines on its 128 A320neos and has completed engine replacement exercise.

As per the officials, Wadia Group-operated GoAir is yet to install modified engines on its A320Neos.

"After the expiry of the deadline which is August 31, the DGCA will not allow to fly GoAir's A320neo planes, without modified engines," a source told ETV Bharat.

However, another source added that in view of the current situation, DGCA may extend the deadline for GoAir to complete engine replacement exercise.
