Indian Railways to roll out 8,000 coaches in FY 2019-20

Indian Railways will roll out around 8,000 units which will increase the coach manufacturing units by over 30% in the FY 2019-20. Railways are also planning to export coaches, trainsets, wheels and other accessories to other countries.

Indian Railways to roll out 8,000 coaches in FY 2019-20

New Delhi: Indian Railways coach manufacturing units are soon to see over 30 per cent increase in the FY 2019-20, by producing around 8,000 units and taking a further jump to 10,000 units in the next year.

Railways are also planning to export coaches, trainsets, wheels and other accessories to other countries.

"At present, our exports are limited are minimal and concentrated in neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Now, we are getting interests from countries in North America," said a railway official.

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) of Indian Railways is all set to meet its target of manufacturing 4,000 coaches in 2019-20 as it has already beaten its last year's outturn of 3,262 coaches in just 215 days.

"Last year itself it was the world's largest coach factory and now it has come very near to its own record to cross the 4,000 mark which used to be considered as unthinkable a year ago. ICF has beaten its last year's outturn of 3,262 mark in just 9 months and 13 days," said Rajesh Agarwal, Member Rolling Stock, Railway Board.

He also said that the ICF can achieve the target of manufacturing 5,000 coaches in the next Financial year.

In the upcoming years, Indian Railways is also aiming to transform trains through technology, providing world-class train journey to passengers.

Member Rolling Stock said, "Indian Railways last year has already set key milestones towards achieving significant growth in manufacturing and producing record number coaches to meet the domestic requirements as well as to make the industry export-ready. It has also achieved the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that are set under the Paris agreement for making long term environmental impact."

He further added, "The year 2019 draw defining change in five areas of Indian Railways including passenger experience bringing in various trend sets, freight logistics, manufacturing and in maintaining the environment."

Focussing on the issue of cleanliness and wastage of water in Railways, integrated mechanized cleaning has also been provided at 950 stations and bio-toilets have been introduced to 100 percent coaches.
