New Delhi: In a significant development over a major security concern, India is constructing underground caverns and semi-underground bunkers at various locations along the India-China border.

National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) Chairman cum Managing director Balraj Joshi
Speaking to ETV Bharat, National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) Chairman cum Managing director Balraj Joshi said that if the project becomes successful, more such bunkers will be set up. "We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Army for construction of underground caverns and semi-underground bunkers at various locations along the India China border," said Joshi.
It is believed such bunkers will help India in any combat situation. Referring to the ongoing hydropower projects in J&K, Joshi said that the ongoing projects are running smoothly. "The administration and the people in J&K are very cooperative," he said.
Interestingly, the J&K government had to clear a huge debt to NHPC. "With the formation of the union territory, the power has now come to the central government, I believe we will get all dues," said Joshi.
The NHPC CMD further said that the corporation would resume the 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydro Power project and 2880 MW Dibang Multipurpose project very soon. "We have got a go-ahead from National Green Tribunal for Lower Subansiri Project and once the water level along the Assam Arunachal Pradesh border area goes down, we will start our work," said Joshi.
Significantly, the NHPC Limited has reported a robust 19 per cent quarterly growth in the standalone net profit at Rs 881 crore during the first quarter of current fiscal, against Rs 738 crore of the corresponding period.
