India registers biggest ever single day spike in COVID-19 cases

New Delhi: As India appeared to be slowly coming out of the stringent lockdown put in place to contain the spread of novel coronavirus in the country, it witnessed the highest ever spike in COVID-19 cases with 2293 cases reported in last 24 hours.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in India till date is 37336 with 26167 still active. As many as 9951 people have also been cured, taking the total recovery rate to 26.65 percent.

Maharastra is still at the top of registering 11506 COVID-19 cases followed by Gujarat with 4721 and Delhi 3738 such cases. Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh are four other states who have crossed 2000 positive cases.  

Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry has issued a clarification regarding movements of persons and vehicles in orange zone, during two weeks lockdown with effect from May 4.

The Ministry said that in the orange zones in addition to the activities prohibited throughout the country, inter district and intra district plying of buses remains prohibited.

The Ministry clarified that taxis and cab aggregators are permitted with one driver and two passengers only. Inter district movement of individuals and vehicles is allowed only for permitted activities with maximum two passengers beside the driver in four wheeler vehicles.  

The Ministry further suggested that States and UTs based on their assessment and priorities, may choose to permit a lesser number of activities.

The Home Ministry, meanwhile, has reconstituted two of the 11 Empowered Groups, setup to monitor the developments related to the virus.
