India recommits to work together for the success of the UN: S Jaishankar

India released a postage stamp commemorating United Nation's diamond jubilee anniversary. Department of Posts previously released similar such commemorative postage stamps on UN’s 9th, 40th and 50th anniversaries in 1954, 1985, and 1995 respectively.

New Delhi: India on Friday released the commemorative postage stamp to mark the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (UN). The stamp was released by the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications in the presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar as the chief guest at the event and Secretary (Posts), DOP and Secretary (West) Vikash Swaroop, Ministry of External Affairs.

Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar wrote, “Welcome the initiative by India Post Office to release commemorative postage stamp today on UN75 at the eve of its founding day”.

“As we look forward to our 8th term at UNSC, we recommit to work together to make this, one United Nations, the best possible @UN there can be”, he added.

The minister highlighted that as a member of the United Nations, India was deeply invested in the UN’s success and had been at the forefront of UN peacekeeping operations.

It may be noted that the Department of Posts has previously released similar such commemorative postage stamps on UN’s 9th, 40th and 50th anniversaries in 1954, 1985, and 1995 respectively.

Jaishankar reiterated that in the last 75 years the UN has served as the platform for the nations of the world to come together under one roof and dream, and work together towards a better future of Humankind.

As the founding member of the United Nations, India has invested its heart and soul right from the crafting of the principles UN charter to be in the forefront of keeping peacing," he added.

Earlier this year, India was elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term, with an overwhelming majority. It garnered 184 votes in the General Assembly that consists of 193 members.

The two-year term will begin on 1 January 2021, and along with India — Ireland, Mexico and Norway were also elected to the council.

It is pertinent to note that India was the sole candidate from the Asia-Pacific region vying for a non-permanent membership. Its candidature was unanimously endorsed by the 55-member Asia-Pacific Group in June last year.

It is the eighth time India has been elected a non-permanent member of the UNSC with overwhelming support. Previously, it has been elected as a member for the period of 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and 2011-2012.

The UN Security Council is one of the six main organs of the UN and is primarily responsible for maintaining international peace and security around the world. The other five organs of the UN are the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice and the Secretariat.

The UNSC held its first session on 17 January 1946 in Westminster, London. Since then, the main headquarters for the council has been in New York City at the UN Headquarters.

It consists of 15 members — five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members. The five permanent members are the United States, United Kingdom, Russia, China and France. Every year, five non-permanent members are elected for a tenure of two years.
