India ready to work with new govt in Sri Lanka: MEA

The External Affairs Ministry said that it was ready to work closely with the newly elected government in Sri Lanka. Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar conveyed PM Modi's message to the new President of Sri Lanka and said that the President accepted PM Modi's invitation and will be visiting India November 29-30.

New Delhi: India on Thursday said it was ready to work closely with the new government in Sri Lanka and expressed hope that it will fulfil aspirations of the Tamil community living in the island country.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Raveesh Kumar claimed that India is ready to work with the government of the day in Ceylon.

Talking about the Tamil's in Sri Lanka, Kumar said that External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar has already conveyed the message to the Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa that process of national reconciliation should be taken forward.

The newly elected Sri Lankan President accepted PM Modi's invitation. He will be visiting India on November 29-30, Kumar added.

Intro:New Delhi: Given at the history of relationship of Modi administration with Rajapaksas, Gotabaya Rajpaksa's ascendance to power in Sri Lanka has raised many eyebrows in New Delhi.


Body:Clearing the air over the future of the relationship, the Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar claimed that India is ready to work with the government of the day in Ceylon.

Brushing aside whether Rajapaksas' close proximity with Beijing is a matter of worry for New Delhi, Raveesh Kumar invoked the historical ties between both nations and claimed that India's relationship with Sri Lanka is not dependent on any 3rd country.

Prime Mimister Modi was the leader to wish the newly elected Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. To make sure that India's ties with Ceylon continue to enjoy same the dynamism like it had during former President Sirisena's tenure, External Affairs Minister Dr. Jaishankar rushed to Colombo to convey PM Modi's message and invitation to visit India.



Conclusion:Efforts of the Modi administration didn't go in vain as the newly elected Sri Lankan President accepted PM Modi's invite. He will be visiting India on November 29-30.

On the query about the future of Tamil's in Sri Lanka, MEA spokesperson said EAM Jaishankar has already the conveyed the message to the Sri Lankan President that process of national reconciliation should be taken forward.

To which, Sri Lanka's newly elected President has public made statement assuring that he is everyone's President and he will also work those who haven't voted for him. Gotabaya has also expressed his commitment for working towards development of Northern and Eastern provinces and considers India a valued partner towards this endeavour.
