Imams and Muezzins face financial crunch due to COVID

Imams and Muezzins across the country are facing a difficult time owing to COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the Imams who lost their livelihood took to selling roadside snacks in order to survive.

Hyderabad: Since the beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, Imams and Muezzins of the mosques in many states of the country started facing financial difficulties due to unclear payment.

Imams and muezzins are financially vulnerable groups and COVID-19 only aggravated their condition. Many Imams and muezzins were fired from many Mosques due to lack of funds and many of them were forced to set up stalls and start small businesses.

The Imams and muezzins of Bhopal and adjoining districts, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, have not been paid for six months forcing the imams of the mosques to support themselves by opening small roadside shops.

In Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, imams in several mosques are facing financial problems due to low salaries. Some imams have even changed their livelihood due to poverty.

The full responsibility of providing for the Imams and muezzins rests with the Muslim population of the area, but in times of trouble, special attention should be paid to the imams and muezzins so that they can lead a good life.

The similar situation is of Gujarat where many of the Imams and Muezzins were forced to leave the state and go back to their respective home states as most of the Mosques were locked due to COVID.
