Hyderabad: Like every other place that he visited, Gandhi inspired and motivated the people of Jharkhand's Hazaribagh as well to stand against the British rule in India. He transformed people and their beliefs wherever he went, so much that they never forgot his contribution to their lives.
During his visit (in the 1920s), a prominent freedom fighter from the city Ramnarayan Singh became a close ally of Gandhi. The two discussed topics like widow remarriage, illiteracy and untouchability for hours. There were also several exchanges of letters between them.
Gandhi's fondness for him was evident in the fact that he also sent a condolence letter on the demise of Singh's wife. Singh's personal diary has several other incidents where Gandhi became a tool for the transformation of beliefs of the people in this city.
The ground where he addressed the public in Hazaribagh was later named Gandhi maidan in his memory. Upon his demise, his ashes were also brought here so that people could pay their respects to their beloved leader.
