Gujarat registers highest COVID-19 mortality rate at 6.22 per cent

Amid a surge in corona cases across the nation, Gujarat on Sunday registered the highest number of mortality rate at 6.22 per cent.

Gandhinagar: As the total number of active corona cases across the nation have mounted to 1,20,406, Gujarat has so far registered highest mortality rate of covid-19 patients, a source said.

The highest number of covid-19 fatalities was initially reported from Maharastra at 2.849, however, the mortality rate in Maharashtrea was 3.55 per cent. Though there are less number of COVID-19 cases in Gujarat when compared to Maharashtra, the mortality rate stands at 6.22 per cent.

Between the time span of May 30 to June 5, a total of 3,175 new coronavirus cases were registered in Gujarat while as many as 210 patients causalities were reported. Further, according to the press release issued by the state government’s health department, the recovery rate in Gujarat by June 5 was 68.05 per cent.

"The highest mortality rate of corona patients raises questions on the quality of health services in Gujarat. 1,200-bed in COVID-19 facility of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital had only 180 ventilators but after a sharp spike in cases 40 ventilators were added, taking the total number to 220," a govt source said.

On June 5, as many as 510 new cases were registered taking the total cases to more than 19,000. So far, 1,190 coronavirus patients have died and Ahmedabad alone has registered 13,678 positive cases of which 968 have succumbed to death.
