New Delhi: Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said that the government is mulling a new law where citizens reporting illegal parking will get a portion of the fine paid by the defaulter.

Gadkari said the government is planning to bring the law in a year's time

Speaking to reporters here, Gadkari said that the new law might be brought in a year in order to provide enough time to the states to build proper parking systems.

He added that the citizens can click pictures of vehicles parked illegally on roads and report it to the concerned authorities. On doing so, they will get a portion of the fine paid by the defaulter.

The Transport Minister said that the parking was increasingly becoming a cause for concern in fast-growing cities, and advocated for the construction of multi-level parking systems in government offices, restaurants and other public places.

Gadkari informed that the Delhi government has been asked to move all godowns located in the city to a logistic park outside, adding that the under-construction Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will benefit business.

"The trucks who could make just 6-8 Delhi-Mumbai trips in a month, will be able to make 10-11 trips once the Expressway is ready," he said, adding that instead of 15-tonne trucks, 40 tonne-trucks can operate, which will bring down logistical costs.

Brushing aside reports of the NHAI being in a financial crisis, Gadkari said that five banks are now ready with funding worth Rs 50,000 crore each for the NHAI.
