New Delhi: Criticising the central government's move for privatising Air India, CPI (M) Politburo and former MP Brinda Karat said that the present government intends to sell-off India.

CPI (M) Politburo Brinda Karat

In an exclusive interview with ETV Bharat, Brinda Karat attacked the Central government and said that the present government intends to "sell-off India instead of 'Make in India'."

"What kind of economic approach is this! This government is trying to sell off India but not make in India," Karat said, while referring to the Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri's statement in the Parliament, where he has said that government needs to privatise Air India or else it will be shut down.

"This is a bankruptcy of the government...This is a national airline and they (government) has melted the airline dry. It's really a serious concern," added Karat.

The statement given by Karat assumes significance as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman on Wednesday has admitted in the Parliament that amid a slowing economy, her government is taking necessary actions to put the economy on a higher growth trajectory.

However, referring to the government's privatisation move, Karat vehemently opposed the incumbent BJP government for handing over national assets to the corporates.

"They are privatizing everything...one day they will say we can't run defence so we will hand it over to the private sector or else we will shut it down," said Karat.

Criticising the Centre's $5 trillion economy, she said, "They are dreaming of ridiculous things. Out of 117 countries, India comes 102 in the world hunger index...the Government need to feed its people rather than dreaming of ridiculous things."
