New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday summoned the Chief Secretary of Assam, in a case relating to the detention of foreigners, and directed him not to enter the state until the court permits.
The bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also showed displeasure over the affidavit submitted by the state government and termed it as an "exercise in futility" and also sought to know as to how many persons, declared foreigners by the Tribunal, have amalgamated with the local population.
While questioning the absence of officials, the bench comprising of Justice Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna, said, "What is the number of declared foreigners who have amalgamated with the local population. That is why we wanted your Chief Secretary to remain present."
The court was hearing a PIL filed by activist Harsh Mander, on the condition of foreigners in detention centres.
