UK travellers arrive in India as flights resume

About 289 travellers from the UK arrived at Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport as flights resume after a brief ban over the new variant of Covid surfaced in the UK.

Bangalore: After the suspension of flights from the UK on December 23 following the spread of new Covid strain, flights have resumed. The first flight from the UK arrived at Kempegowda International Airport at 4 30 am today.

There were 289 passengers in the flight and they have undergone RT-PCR test. It included 146 men, 95 women, 32 children and 16 crew members. The test was free of cost and the results would come after five hours. Four are suspected to be Covid positive and they are isolated. Passengers were seen waiting for the test result.

Over 30 personnel were deployed inside the terminal. There were 12 Health Department staff to undergo testing of passengers, while six Revenue Department staff collected personal information of passengers. Five policemen have been deployed to monitor the terminal until the test result is out.

The officials have put stamps on Covid negative passengers and they are advised to undergo 14 days of home quarantine. According to reports, local health authorities are advised to monitor the health of the passengers and ensure that they maintain the Covid protocol. Genomic sequencing of Covid strain found in UK citizens confirmed it as new strain on December 12. Travel curbs were announced from December 23 to January 7, reports said.
