Education Ministry releases New Architectural Education Regulations

Union Minister of Education, Ramesh Pokhriyal, virtually launched the 'Minimum Standards of Architectural Education Regulations, 2020'. Ramesh Pokhriyal said that Council of Architecture should draw inspiration from the present and past treasures to bring a paradigm shift in the field of architecture.

New Delhi: In Compliance with the National Education Policy 2020, the 'Minimum Standards of Architectural Education Regulations 2020' was launched on Tuesday by the Ministry of Education.

Thirty-Eight years after it was last framed in 1983, the Architectural Education has been given some transformational changes and much flexibility than before.

Like the NEP-2020, choice-based credit system has been inducted in the B.Arch courses and students will have now an option to exit the course after 3 years. University will appropriate degree for the students opting for early exit. The eligibility criteria for admission has also been revised.

Now 50% weightage will be given to marks secured by the student in 10+2 and 50% weightage will be from the Aptitude test.

The council has adopted NEP compliant framework and methodology and thus apprenticeship based, practice-oriented and industry-led education and training will be emphasised according to the new regulations.

Study tours and study of History, Culture, Tradition and Heritage will now be a compulsory part of the Architectural studies. The New regulation was launched by Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and MoS Sanjay Dhotre through a webinar.

Highlighting the architectural beauty of India, it's monuments and temples, Ramesh Pokhriyal said that Council of Architecture should draw inspiration from the present and past treasures to bring a paradigm shift in the field of architecture.

He also said that the NEP proposes many massive reforms and the implementation requires contribution from all, and the new COA regulations are an important step in the direction which brings in many ideas and thoughts from the proposed NEP-2020.

The minister of state for Education Sanjay Dhotre said that the new regulations have finally seen the light of the day after a long wait.

Since 1983 the education scenario has undergone a vast change all over the world. Therefore it was high time that the regulations dealing with architectural education in the country need to be amended in the light of the recent developments in the field.

The Council of Architecture is the first one to revise their Regulations after the approval of New National Education Policy-2020 by the union cabinet. Most of the regulations adopted in the document has been done in compliance with the NEP.
