Economic Survey: No train collisions in 2018-19, fire incidents on rise

A decrease in the number of train collisions while there has been an increase in the number of fire incidents on trains, an economic survey tabled at the Parliament stated.

New Delhi: As the Economic Survey has been tabled in the Parliament, on Thursday, it states that the incidents of train collision have come down to zero in 2018-19, but the occurrences of fire in trains have registered an increase.

"The incidents of train collision have come down to zero in the year 2018-19. The incidents of derailment have come down from 78 in 2016-17 to 46 in the last financial year," the survey noted.

However, the occurrences of fire in trains have increased to six in 2018-19 as compared to one in 2016-17.

Regarding the Indian Railways Mission Electrification program, the Survey stated that Indian Railways has initiated a major electrification program for electrifying 100 per cent of its Broad Gauge network. It would reduce the dependence on imported diesel oil.

The revenue earning freight loading, excluding loading by Konkan Railways, during 2017-18 was at 1159.55 million tonne, as against 1106.15 million tonne during 2016-17, registering an increase of 4.83 per cent.
