EC applauds senior citizens, diferently-abled for voting

Applauding senior citizens and the differently-abled for exercising their franchise with enthusiasm, the Election Commission said that it felt 'proud' after the positive turnout witnessed in the sixth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Sunday applauded senior citizens, women and the differently-abled, who came out to vote in the sixth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

EC said it felt 'proud'

"As a nation, we feel very proud that many centenarians came out and voted, signalling that the past, present and future of this country has been secured," an Election Commission official said.

The official thanked all in the field including booth level officials and volunteers who facilitated voting by senior citizens and people with disabilities, as well as security personnel deployed in the pooling booths for making "extraordinary efforts" to ensure safety and confidence of voters.

Elections were held in 14 seats in Uttar Pradesh, 10 in Haryana, 4 each in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, 4 in Jharkhand, and 7 in Delhi.

With Sunday’s phase, voting is over in nearly 89 per cent of the 543 constituencies. The last phase of voting will take place on May 19 for the remaining 59 seats.

The Election Commission (EC) said there was 63.3 per cent turnout in the sixth phase, with West Bengal recording over 80 per cent polling and Delhi registering 60 per cent.
