Dharamshala: The farmers of the Bhangal sub-division of Himachal Pradesh's Dharamshala have increased their income by planting non-seasonal vegetables. Farmers are earning around 11 crores by planting 7 thousand tonnes of non-seasonal vegetables in small areas.
The state's agriculture department inspired the farmers of the area to switch traditional crops to cash crops and non-seasonal vegetable production.
These farmers were earlier earning Rs. 4-5 thousand per acre from traditional farming, but after they started planting the non-seasonal plants like brinjal, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and radish, they are earning up to 25 thousand rupees per acre.
To provide convenience to the farmers, a vegetable market has been set up near Multhan area. Apart from this, the farmers are selling their produce directly in other states too at good prices.
District Agriculture Officer Kuldeep Dhiman said that the irrigation facility has been started in the gram panchayat area of Kothi cohorts, Bargarh, Gharatam, Malthan and Luai under the Integrated Jailagam Project with the help of NABARD.
"The availability of better irrigation facilities has helped farmers in increasing the vegetable production," Dhiman said.
Apart from this, the farmers are being provided with advanced seed grants.
