Demand for 112 lakh houses in urban India

After undertaking a demand survey for assessing the demand for housing in urban areas, the state and union territories reported a total assessed demand of around 112 lakh houses till now, the Centre said.

New Delhi: Following the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) in 2015, the states and Union Territories have so far reported an assessed housing demand of around 112 lakh, the Centre has said.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs had constituted a Technical Group (TG-12) on estimation of Urban Housing shortage of the country for the Twelfth Five Year Plan (2012-17). As per the Report of this Committee, the total housing shortage at the beginning of the 12th Plan period i.e. in 2012, was 18.78 million.

After the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) in 2015, the states and Union Territories were requested to undertake demand survey for assessing demand of housing in urban areas. The assessed demand reported by the state and Union Territories so far is around 112 lakh.
