The Prime Minister was welcomed by the organisers by presenting him with a copy of the holy book Ramcharitmanas and a set of bow and arrow.

Prime Minister Modi also witnessed a short performance of Ram Leela culminating in the death of Ravan in the hands of Lord Ram.

Earlier in the day, he extended his greetings to the nation on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra.

"Greetings on the auspicious occasion of #VijayaDashami," Prime Minister Modi tweeted alongside a video showcasing his past visits to Dussehra events.

The festival of Dussehra marks the end of the nine-day-long Navaratri celebration. As per Hindu mythology, this is the day when Lord Ram killed Demon King Ravana after a long battle.

The day is celebrated with enthusiasm and vigour throughout the country in different ways but burning effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkaran, and Meghnad along with fireworks remains the most prominent form of celebration in the northern part of the country.

In South India, Mysore's Dussehra is known for its grandeur, where thousands throng the city palace to witness the procession and take part in festivities.

3 excise officials held for man's death in custody
Thrissur (Kerala), Oct 8 (PTI) Three officials of the
excise department were arrested on Tuesday in connection with
the death of a man, who was taken into custody by the
department for allegedly possessing ganja, police said.
"We are in search of four more accused in the case,"
a senior police official told PTI.
Ranjith Kumar (35) of Malappuram was being taken to a
police station on October 1 when he showed symptoms of seizure
and died on the way to a hospital. But, a postmortem report
revealed he had multiple internal injuries, the police said.
A case of unnatural death was registered and later
homicide charges were levelled against the excise officials,
they said.
Kumar was a history-sheeter with many 'ganja'
(cannabis) cases registered against him, the police said.
Most of the cases were for allegedly selling and
distributing the narcotic among schoolchildren, they added.
Meanwhile, opposition Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala
has sought a judicial probe into Kumar's death. PTI RRT
