New Delhi: After the Supreme Court has dismissed the review petition of one of the death-row convicts, Akshay Kumar Singh, in the Nirbhaya gang-rape case, Congress demanded immediate enforcement of the death penalty, terming the 7-year-long wait as "painful".

All India Mahila Congress Committee President Sushmita Dev speaking to ETV Bharat in New Delhi, on Wednesday.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, All India Mahila Congress Committee President Sushmita Dev said, "I welcome SC decision to reject the review petition. It was long overdue. The entire nation was anxiously waiting for this judgement. We need to study this case to find out what are the lacunas in the criminal justice system so that such a gruesome rape and murder case should not have to wait for seven years."

On AP Singh, advocate of the convict, seeking three weeks' time to file a mercy petition before the President, Sushmita said, "We can't stop him but I feel that there has to be a balance between doing justice to Nirbhaya and doing justice to these accused. These advocates can invoke their rights but I think no forum can delay this decision."

However, the Delhi Court has directed the Tihar Authorities to issue a fresh notice for one week to Nibhaya case verdicts as to whether they want to file a mercy petition as the next hearing will be done on January 7.
