New Delhi: Hours after the Election Commission banned UP CM Yogi Aditynanath and BSP supremo Mayawati for communal and hate speeches during election campaigning, Congress has now pulled up on the EC for staying mum at the controversial statements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah.
Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, in a sharp attack at the BJP's errant leaders, alleged that the statements made by Modi during his election rally in Wayanad and by Amit Shah in Nagpur were far more controversial and divisive.
He said, "PM's statement claiming that Rahul Gandhi has chosen the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat because the place enjoys a large number of Muslim voters is an attempt by the party to create a communal divide among people. Also, the BJP President's statement in Nagpur echoed the same view when he said that he can't make out whether Wayanad is in India or in Pakistan. The party leaders are on a mission to spread venomous propaganda."
He further added that it's against the model code of conduct and the Election Commission need to take strict action against those who try to create animosity between different religions.
The veteran leader claimed that the EC was a powerless body until the Congress appealed to the Supreme Court to investigate against the divisive leaders of the party during electioneering.
Singhvi also condemned Azam Khan's comment on Jaya Prada and said that such statements demean the spirit of elections and are a violation of the model code of conduct.
